Most clogs are going to be relatively near the top
of the pipe that you are going to unclog. Therefore, it is possible that
you'll be able to get the clog out without too much extra work. In this
case, you will not need to pull the plumbing of your tub or sink apart.
Just unscrew and lift up the cover plate of your drain system. After you
do this, you should be able to see the clog in the drain. You should
remove the drain clog and then clean the inside of the drain with an old
toothbrush. The cleaner you make it, the longer you can go in the future
without needing to clean the drain again. Most often, the clog is caused
by too much hair in the drain.
The best way to get the clog out of the drain is to use a hand auger or
any other tool that will pull the clog out of the drain, instead of
pushing it further down and away from the top of the pipe. Once you've
pulled the clog out, then you will not have to worry about the material
in that clog causing more drain clogs in the future or further down the
pipe. After you pull the clog out, you should flush the pipe with
boiling water to remove any extra materials in the drain.
If this does not clear up the drain clog, however, you'll need to move
on.
At this point, you should look for any drain traps in the drainage line.
These are the most likely locations for clogs as it is where most of the
material catches in the pipe. You can also remove clogs from these
locations easily as they will be easy to disconnect from the rest of the
pipe and then clean.
Before you disconnect any sections of pipe, make sure that you place a
bucket or pan underneath the sink to catch any extra water. After you've
removed all clogs and reconnected the drain system, you should flush it
out with boiling water in this case as well. If you cannot get to the
clog in your drainage system, however, then you might have to call a
Tampa plumber.
